The St. Louis Building Arts Foundation has a new website up about the Century Building, which was built in 1897 as "a marble palace for business and amusement." The site features historical images of the Century, as well as photos of artifacts that were recovered from the building before the evildoers tore it down for no good reason.

As somebody who lives downtown, whose balcony used to have a view of the Century Bldg, I find this link especially poingnant. I've watched as the Century reluctantly ceded ground to the wrecking ball. I've watched as it was systematically and painstakingly destroyed so a concrete slab parking garage could rise in its place. I'm all for urban renewal, but the historical deletion that this demolition represents is really tragic. I wonder if the future tenants of the old post office and the Paul Brown lofts will realize what the true cost of their parking garage. Hopefully the new structure will cover up the windowless east wall of the Syndicate Trust Building, as its ragged profile simply provides an overt reminder of the hidden cost our auto economy exacts...
