Can't win 'em all, kids: sure, we're on the national radar for some folks because of our sports teams (which is apparently the only imaginable entertainment for Z. Dwight Billingsly and his boring Republican pals)...but our lack of welcome for writers (scroll down to Report #3) on this year's First Fiction Tour leaves us high-and-dry in their estimation. Yikes! Bummer that nobody showed up for this. Doesn't make St. Louis look too good.
And yet, when I read this author's comments, moaning about her book tour, I sensed a depressingly familiar theme, which boils down to this: "Why can't the rest of the world understand us New Yorkers?"
I guess on the evening in question, which was a playoff evening, it was a contest in St. Louis between televised baseball-watching and literary navel-gazing.
oops - the baseball won.
