There was an article in the August 30th issue of The Wall Street Journal about the St. Louis-based Save-A-Lot grocery chain. Save-A-Lot has turned the amazing discovery that poor people in urban areas have to eat too into a winning business strategy. Who'da thunk?
Save-A-Lot also operates Deal$ dollar stores.

Excellent article! I may have to stop in at the Save-A-Lot store on Loughborough sometime.
[Posted by Steve Patterson on Mon., Oct 10, 2005 at 11:23 AM]And Save-a-Lot/Deal$ is in turn a subsidiary of Supervalu, Inc. - also the parent company of Shop-N-Save. So the plot thickens...
Personally, I prefer Foodland, a locally-owned, union-staffed 2-store "chain" with locations at 6155 S. Grand Blvd. at Iron St.; and in Fairmont City, IL. Foodland stocks a great assortment of Hispanic and Bosnian foods, and pretty cheap name brand and non-name brand products. Unlike Shop N Save or Aldi, they actually bag your groceries for you!
I avoid the Save-a-Lot on Jefferson and Cherokee. It is generally a mess. Not sure about the Loughborough store though.

It looks great after they just finished with their remodel, its bright, product fresh and great people working that offer to help people like me.
