Suburban Nightmare

Alex Stirlen, a 17-year-old senior at Lindbergh High School, has confessed to raping and murdering 16-year-old Erin Mace who was also a student at Lindbergh.

Both Alex (screen name CaptainCannabis) and Erin (screen name Mailbox!) have accounts on the STLPUNK website. In his profile, which crashes my browser, Alex says "my creed is pot is so much more than pot. Its a social activity, and a way to make really good friends." Erin listed "Baileys in pretty much anything" under her likes and "Pubic hair" under dislikes. Her brother, Greg Formhals, died three years ago in a car accident; he was also 16. Erin last logged into the STLPUNK site on 9/29 at 8:33 PM, less than 24 hours before she was killed.

STLPUNK was voted "Best Local Web Site" by readers of the RFT. The editors of the RFT named it the "Best Music Web Site."

The site is run by Jerome Gaynor, who had this to say in an article he wrote for The Commonspace in June 2002:

American Suburbia moves kids all over the country, drops them into enormous schools where they don't know anyone, prohibits all non-sanctioned contact, PRETENDS that conflict doesn't exist, and then wonders why kids go crazy.

Alex is charged with arson, rap, murder, armed criminal action and tampering with evidence. "He said he killed her, 'So could be together'" (stltoday.com) hes discusting, and deserves to rott in jail. She was one of the sweetest girls anyone would have ever met, and he killed her. Now hes appoligiseing to his "friends" (he doesnt have anymore) and expecting ppl to care.

Looks like the "CaptainCannabis" profile has been deleted from the site.

StLPunk.com is also sponsoring a memorial fund for Erin Mace.

I was a friend of Erin, and I find this rude. For one every kid in highschool drinks or doe's drugs. Alex is a killer and he deserves what he will get. You make excuses for him, that he was placed in a high school and parents ignored his problems. NO you and everyone eles had to deal with highschool. I dont see anyone eles mudering someone. Alex is sick and he did this himself and it is no ones fault. He is the nightmare not a suburban nightmare. A family is torn apart and her friends will never be the same. If your going to write anything at all why don't you type an article of what the St. Louis area and my highschool has lost. A wonderful girl who died to young and who was loved.

i agree with megan. i was one of her best friends. i was one of his best friends (for a while). he tried to stalk me and a few of my other friends too. he was fucked up in the head, and nothing made him like that except for himself. everyone who knew him, especially me, tried their best to help him get better, and he didn't accept the help. it's his own damn fault and everyone's lives got fucked from it. i dropped out of school. it's a year later, and i still haven't gone back because i am completely changed. i had a 3.8 G.P.A. before that, and still smoked weed. it's not the drugs or the alcohol or the partying or the highschool or suburban life that fucked him up. it wasn't even his parents. he had grandparents that were more kind to him than most people's parents are. it was his head that did it. it was his sick fucking head. you need to get that into yours. not everyone who does drugs or drinks or would rather hang out with friends than go to school murders someone. just him. think about it.
